Project Overview
The DUMBO Benches activate the plaza beside the Manhattan Bridge Archway, offering a new gathering place at the heart of one of Brooklyn’s most iconic sites, DUMBO. Designed by AECOM for the DUMBO BID, the benches are built with galvanized and painted steel tubing, clad with FSC-Certified Brazilian hardwood IPE — a combination of durability, sustainability, and warmth. Their stepped, sculptural design provides flexible seating for everyday use, performances, and public events, while reflecting DUMBO’s industrial history and creative spirit. The project transforms the plaza into a dynamic public living room where the neighborhood’s vibrant culture, historic infrastructure, and waterfront setting come together.
